SUGAR HILL MAKER FEST 2016

SUGAR HILL MAKER FEST 2017

What is the Sugar Hill Maker Fest? Sugar Hill Maker Fest is an evolved version of the STEM Maker Fest. Instead of it being a school-wide event, it has blossomed into a community event in the City of Sugar Hill.

How did the Maker Fest evolve? "The Sugar Hill Maker Fest started as an event project run by Lanier High School’s CDAT (Center for Design and Technology) students. We students decided to take it a step further and work with the city to make it an actual event in the community.

You see, instead of creating a project for the event, I had actually been a member of the Sugar Hill Maker Fest Planning Committee. Throughout 6 months, I had designed graphics such as signage, logos, and banners.

After seeing the initial success of Maker Fest 2016, we aspire to go bigger and better each year. Every year we hope to reach out to more and more makers and develop a thriving community of makers in Sugar Hill and the surrounding areas.

What is the Sugar Hill Maker Fest 2017 (SHMF)? Sugar Hill Maker Fest 2017 is currently in the works right now, as the student planning committee is gearing up for April 22nd, 2017. It is a community event that is hosted by Sugar Hill City and planned by students at Lanier High School. SHMF is an event where businesses and hobbyists can gather and show what they do and how they do it.

The student planning committee this year is smaller than the year before, but it is much easier to communicate and manage. My role in the planning committee is the Lead Graphic Designer. Basically, I create and manage the graphics. So far, I redesigned the Maker Fest logo (it's so much better), designed business cards, designed a new banner, and designed a map for the event. I will also be walking around on the day of the event with a walkie-talkie as one of the event managers.

I am ecstatic and hopeful for this year's success. Last year's event barely made it through due to procrastination of gathering makers, however, this year's event planning is more prepared, thorough, and better. Everyone has their own specific role in the committee, and I am glad that I am still a part of it.

STEM MAKER FAIRE 2015

What is the STEM Maker Faire? The STEM Maker Faire showcases the brains of CDAT academy, allowing students to create booths to introduce people to STEM concepts.

The Maker Faire has begun! My group is planning to host a booth that introduces kids to engineering. Although anyone can participate, we're focusing on integrating kids early on with STEM. The core concept of the project deals with having kids build a strong structure with gummy worms, marshmallows, toothpicks, and skewers. With simple grocery items, we challenge them to explore basic engineering concepts of shapes and weight distribution.

This is one of my favorite projects. It had been very fun to interact with little kids and to watch their faces light up when they spied the sweets. I love working with my group and I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to participate in the event!
